Earlier today(20th November 2014), the Japan crew of Sony's camera division announced the successor to their full-frame mirrorless camera alpha-7 in α7 II with same 24.3MP Sony Exmor sensor. Its almost an year ago , they impressed us with world's first mirrorless system cameras in α7 and α7-R and few months ago added a more pro-like α7-S. Now they came up with another world's first here in 'World's first full-frame camera with 5-axis image stabilization. It also sports 117 phase detection points, 25 contrast detection points, and the same ISO 25600 at the top end plus 5fps shooting capabilities along with 3.0”1,228k-dot resolution tilting LCD monito and the XGA OLED Tru-Finder with 2.36m-dot resolution. Sony says the camera can focus 30% faster than its predecessor and 1.5-times better at tracking moving subjects. Even though , there is no mention of 4K capabilities, α7 II is capable of recording 1080p videos at higher bit-rate of 50mb/s, thanks to the XAVC S codec. The Sony Alpha A7II will go on sale on December 5, 2014 with a price for ¥190,000 (around $1,500) in Japan and in Europe in January ( €1799 -Germany- UK and US price not yet available).

SONY A7II (aka ILCE-A7M2 or A7M2) Full Camera Features Review
    [IMG]
    1) 5-axis image stabilisation:- Sony is the first camera company to put 5-axis image stabilization in a full frame camera, no matter it is mirrorless Sony introduced the only mirrorless full-frame camera available at present in a7, a7r and a7s and now a7m2) or DSLR "The ɑ7 II dramatically expands your range of expression by compensating for five types of camera shake during handheld shooting of still images and movies. The highly effective 4.5-step compensation lets you confidently zoom in faraway subjects, snap detailed close-ups, capture night scenes and more — all with minimal camera shake blur". That means A7-II can compensate for pitch(1) and yaw(2) shakes which can happen at long focal lenghts with bog zoom lenses, the the horizontal and vertical shakes (shift compensation- X and Y axes) common during macro shots with super wide-angle lenses and also for roll shakes in Z-axis during long exposure shots which can not be done by in-lens stabilization found in the lenses. Sony said in press release that, their 5-axis image stabilization is not taken from Olympus's famous tech already present in their mirrorless systems for few years, but developed in their own way for the full frame mirrorless cameras, but there were news back in 2013 that Sony was partnering with Olympus for this tech and also its no secret that Sony's camera division owns major chunk of shares in Olympus now. Even though its taken from Olympus or not, its developed to fit into full-frame system and is going to give the advantage for day to day shooting with your A7II camera. Sony has posted their own videos to show us how 5-axis stabilization works in a7II and you can watch them below.

    2) Compatibility with wide-ranging mountable lenses:-
    [IMG]
New 5-axis image stabilisation lets you enjoy unparalleled handheld shooting freedom with more of your favourite mountable lenses. The short flange-back distance in the E-mount α7 II contributes to broad lens compatibility. You have to use A-mount adapter if you want to use A-mount lenses and other third party adapters for that particular lens to work with A7II camera. Although we are yet to see how they work interms of image quality , low light performance, video capturing etc on this camera. Although this comaptibility is there every other manufacurer, but not all can offer now the 5-axis image stabilization in their cameras so that you can enjoy the freedom from worrying about shaky pictures and image quality even when using lenses without image stabilization.

    3) 35 mm full-frame 24.3-megapixel Exmor™ CMOS sensor:- Sony put the same 24.3MP Exmor sensor we have seen in A7II's predecessor and if rumors are correct, theere is a new type of sensor in deveopment for next generation of fullframe alpha series camera which could be unveiled in early 2015.This image sensor delivers beautiful images from corner to corner and stunning 24.3-megapixel resolution. You'll enjoy low noise, an extremely wide dynamic range, and amazingly rich and subtle gradations. Moreover, innovations that could only be achieved by Sony reproduce details more faithfully so that every scene looks incredibly real. Sony claims , they are no.1 manufacturer ( with 50% market share)now for camera sensors which can be seen in various digital, smartphone and video camera form different brands like, Apple . And there is BIONZ X image processing engine upgraded from previous one, which faithfully reproduces textures and details in real time, as seen by the naked eye, via extra high-speed processing capabilities. Together with front-end Large Scale Integration that accelerates processing, it enables more natural details, more realistic images, richer tonal gradations and lower noise when shooting still images and movies.

    4) High-performance Fast Hybrid AF:- Highly sophisticated Fast Hybrid AF delivers extremely high-speed response, highly accurate prediction and wide area coverage for autofocusing and tracking you can always depend on. Fast Hybrid AF smoothly tracks fast-moving subjects nearly anywhere on the screen thanks to a wide-area 117-point focal plane phase-detection AF sensor which is 30% faster than previous tech and also come with 5 fps continuous AF/AE shooting with accurate tracking.

    5) Pro Video Features :- Sony has added some professional video capability features into A7II this time with introduction of high-bit-rate XAVC S in addtion to AVCHD and MP4, then Picture profile, S-Log2 gamma setting, Time code/user bit and Clean HDMI output (Transfer Full HD movie signals in real time to an external monitor) too.

    6) New Camera Hardware Features:- This palm fit fullframe camera is very solid with its magnesium alloy body , easily customizable buttons, robust lens mount, enhanced grip and shutter button, High-contrast and high-resolution XGA OLED Tru-Finder, anti-dust system and coating for moister and easily tiltable lcd screen etc. The remarkably compact and lightweight body is solidly built to withstand the rigours of shooting in the field. It's the ideal blend of lightweight, solid reliability and steady handling, thanks to a top cover, front cover and internal structure constructed of rigid magnesium alloy. The strength and rigidity of the body and lens mount have been enhanced to provide an especially solid foundation for mounting large, heavy lenses such as super telephoto lenses and those preferred for movie shooting. The grip is refined in shape and height to support a more secure grasp of the camera even when a large lens is mounted. This also contributes to more confident operation of the shutter button and dials. Moreover, the shutter button has been reshaped and shifted forward to enable more natural shooting with less camera shake. The viewfinder offers impressive visibility that contributes to stress-free, intuitive operation. You can accurately monitor what will appear in your final images because it faithfully displays the effects of your various camera settings. Moreover, an advanced 3-lens optical system ensures rich tonal gradation and extremely high contrast. Monitor the stabilising effects of camera shake compensation in the viewfinder or LCD screen while shooting still images by pressing the shutter button halfway or magnifying the image, and while shooting movies by entering movie mode. Even when using a telephoto or macro lens, you can fine-tune framing and focusing with stress-free stability. Button customisation empowers you to shoot just the way you like, with frequently used functions assigned to the customisable buttons of your choice. You can easily assign any of 56 functions*1 to any of 10 buttons*2 to enjoy speedier, more intuitive operation and maximum convenience. Controls are refined for intuitive operation and immediate adjustment of parameters while viewing scenes through the viewfinder. The front and rear dials have been thoroughly refined and positioned with overall handling in mind to enable easier, more efficient turning. It's a level of refinement that even surpasses that of other α7 series models. The LCD screen tilts upward approx. 107 degrees and downward approx. 41 degrees to accommodate wide-ranging shooting angles. This flexibility combines with compact mobility to greatly expand your shooting options. Viewing is also clear under direct sunlight thanks to WhiteMagic™ technology that nearly doubles the brightness of the display. To keep your photos blemish-free, a special anti-static coating on the surface of the optical filter suppresses the attachment of both dry and moist dust particles when changing lenses. An anti-dust mechanism also vibrates at high speed when you select Cleaning Mode to remove any particles adhering to the filter.

So this α7 II packs powerful movie-making capabilities in extremely compact dimensions. You can create movies of breathtaking visual and sound quality with exquisite background blur, remarkably clear details, and the sensitivity to bring dark scenes to vibrant life. Features like Picture Profile and P/A/S/M modes further expand your creative options. Also there is Lock-on a)AF tracking which helps to keep moving subjects in focus, b)Area-specific noise reduction which selectively divides the image into areas based on patterns (such as edges, textures and flat areas like blue skies), then applies the most appropriate noise reduction for each area to markedly reduce noise and achieve a new level of clarity, c)built-in Wi-Fi and NFC which is there to connect to your android or iOS smartphone or tablet with a touch, d) Multi Frame NR (Noise Reduction) which composites four shots to significantly suppress noise and raise sensitivity, letting you clearly capture dark scenes without a tripod or flash. Camera shake blur is also lowered while contrast and detail are raised e) PlayMemories Camera Apps - lets you add new functions to your camera's existing feature-set to heighten photographic expression according to your own creative needs; most of them are paid and can be downloaded straight to your camera or smartphone from here.

Tony Northrup's A7m2 preview and comparison

Award-winning author & photographer Tony Northrup comparing A7m2's features, price, lens options etc to various DSLR models particularly Canon and Nikon. But most of the times he slams the mirrorless camera wihtout realising the fact that , its just few years old and not kind enough to its portablity compared to massive DSLRs. Well mirrorless cameras are closing the gap day by day, so its not very long from now, we will see Nikon or Canon going Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic or even Olympus way....
